About Monkey King Slots

Monkey King is another fantastic slot from Yggdrasil Gaming and perhaps their most feature-rich slot to date. The monkey king himself is certainly a special character here. He shows up on the golden wild, which is sticky as long as you keep winning. He also pops up on the screen every once in a while to bring a little extra surprise. There are three free spin features to choose from, though it’s not that easy to actually trigger the free spins. Thankfully the base game comes with plenty of action to keep you busy and your funds topped up – at least most of the time.

What can we say? Yggdrasil Gaming simply doesn’t disappoint in the graphics department. Whoever their graphic designers are, they are sure earning their keep. Yggdrasil makes some of the best-looking slots around – consistently. Whenever the monkey king shows up for a little martial arts demonstration, you’ll be delighted to watch him.

Whilst we have an Asian theme here, the symbols don’t sport distinctly Asian items. There is a scroll, a chalice, a cauldron, a crest, a vial and a crown. Four great looking card suit symbols make up the low paying symbols. It all looks pretty fantastic.

The soundtrack is somewhat Asian inspired and makes for a nice ambient background sound. Nothing to grind on your nerves here, which is always a relief.

The slot is considered to be ‘All Ways Pay’, which is not exactly right. Three or more matching symbols pay from left to right or right to left. But they have to start on the leftmost or rightmost reel to count. So really, it pays both ways, but not all ways.

As mentioned, even the base game keeps thing rolling along nicely. The regular wild only appears on reels 2 and 4. There it will remain sticky as long as you keep winning. Considering their beneficial positions for a pays both ways slot, you can really get on a winning roll here.

There is also a countdown wild, which appears only on reel 3. It comes with a number (often 3), which indicates the number of spins it will be sticking around.

Then there is a random treasure chest which shows up on reel 5. It will contain a coin prize, can trigger the monkey king feature or even launch the free spin bonus.

The monkey king, by the way, comes with a base game feature, where he will show up, jump around and change one symbol on the reels to benefit a winning combination. He can appear after any spin and the symbol he changes will always benefit the player.

Finally there’s the free spin bonus. We found it terribly difficult to trigger. You need three free spin symbols anywhere on the screen to trigger it. If you get four, you’ll also get 1000 coins as a prize. Five of those symbols would give you 5000 coins.

The free spins come in three modes. With the incremental wilds you can choose to get 6 spins and increase the number of wilds from 1 to 6 with each consecutive spin. That means you will have reels 2 and 4 stacked with wilds on your last spin.

If you choose stacked wilds, you will get 8 spins. Any wilds that show up on reels 2 and 4 will remain sticky, but there also a stacked wild which can appear on reel 3 and cover it completely.

The starting wild gives you 10 free spins. Here one sticky wild will appear on the middle position of reel 3. Additionally wilds showing up on reels 2 and 4 would also remain sticky for the remainder of the bonus round.

It’s not possible to re-trigger free spins, but if you get the treasure chest on reel 5 again, two additional spins will be added each time.

Other Slot Machines You Might Enjoy

With so many features in the base game alone, you won’t soon be bored. The slot is a lot of fun and very engaging. Eventually you will wonder, however, if the free spins are a myth or if they do come around. It took us a long time to see them.

The slot can be quite tricky, too, because it can play very volatile when you don’t get any winning combination for 30 or more spins. But once those sticky wilds hit just right, you can then get a winning run of 30 or more spins as well. So be patient, you will get there.
