About A Day At The Derby Slots

Saddle up for a day of racing as the Sport of Kings comes to your screen courtesy of Rival Gaming. Racing fans can be forgiven for getting excited about this one, we certainly were, but does it live up to expectations, does it do the sport of horse racing justice?

A Day at the Derby begins with a cutscene, but don’t expect next generation 3D graphics. These are 2D cartoon graphics, not up to much, and whilst they are fine on the base game and even in the bonus round, we’re not sure why Rival Gaming exposed them via a cutscene. In terms of its payout, A Day at the Derby is not too shabby. The highest paying symbols are the trophy, which gives you 1,500x your line bet and the bouquet of flowers (if you’re wondering why these would feature in a game about horse racing, it’s because they are often gifted to the winner) which will give you 1,000x.

There is also a jockey symbol who triggers the jackpot if you land 5 of them, and returns smaller wins if you get just 3 or 4. A Day at the Derby includes wild symbols on every other reel, with 2 adding a 2x multiplier and 3 adding a 3x multiplier.

Unfortunately, big wins are few and far between on A Day at the Derby, and it’s not uncommon to go many spins without getting anything, only to be hit with a few tiny wins that return less than a quarter of your stake. This is the sort of thing that frustrates many slot fans.

Bonus Feature

You only need one of the scatter symbols in order to unlock the free spins, but you’ll only get 5 spins if that is the case. If you get 3 of them, then you’ll get 10, whilst 4 will give you 20. These free spins don’t return big wins very often, simply because the base game isn’t very generous and there are no multipliers added.

The bonus round is decent, utilising a different screen and creating a fun little game, but as with the free spins, you’re not going to get a huge return here.

Other Slot Machines You Might Enjoy

This game obviously doesn’t hold up against some of the newer 3D slots on the market, but we wouldn’t expect it to. However, we would hope for something a little more polished, and if not, we would at least expect multiple bonus rounds and a high RTP. A Day at the Derby doesn’t deliver on any of those fronts, which is very frustrating and makes for a game that you’re only ever going to play for a couple of minutes.
