About Star Dust Slots

Get your retro fix with Star Dust, a Microgaming slot that rockets the player into the outer reaches of the solar system, where a cosmic backdrop and some glittery jewels await, along with a big wild and a whole lot more. But has the “retro” tag been used as a excuse to create a game that is ultimately too simple and too basic to compete in today’s marketplace, or does it genuinely offer something new and worthwhile?

We don’t have anything against old-school slots and quite like the retro games that Microgaming have created in the past, but Star Dust is stuck somewhere in the middle. They have done enough to make it more like their range of modern video slots or bonus slots, and less like their retro slots, yet it doesn’t have the graphics or the attention to detail to make it into the former category. The visuals are basic, to put it mildly, and there is nothing to get excited about.

Aside from the typical symbols, representing playing card values, Star Dust uses precious gems. These are worth much more than the standard symbols, and you’ll get 750x for 5 of the biggest, which is the red gem, with 500x for the yellow, 375x for the green and 250x for the blue. This is not a great deal and is a little disappointing, to say the least. The wild does go someway to offset this though, paying 2,500x.

Bonuses

Star Dust has a free spins round. Again, this negates the retro tag, as retro games don’t usually have bonus rounds, but in this case we’re happy it broke that particular mould. The 1024 paylines really come into their own during this feature, and the RTP seems to increase. There is also something known as Radiant Respins in this feature, which helps to make things a little more interesting and to keep those big wins consistent. The free spins can not be re-triggered, which is a let down, and there is no other feature to speak of, which is also a disappointment.

Summary

We didn’t have high hopes for Star Dust when we first saw it. There isn’t much to like with the aesthetic — it’s far too basic. The bonus feature helped, giving us something to get our hopes up, and the same goes for the wild symbol, but apart from that there is very little else going on. If you like retro games then you might appreciate Star Dust more than we did, but if you like slots that are feature packed and graphically stunning, this is not for you.
